A DAY after he put in his papers, Dr Naresh Trehan and Fortis Healthcare are at it again. This time it’s over the number of doctors who are quitting Escorts Heart Institute to go with Dr Trehan to Apollo Hospital.
While a source close to Dr Trehan said 70 medicos, mostly doctors and few paramedics, have submitted their resignation letters to the Fortis management, a spokesperson of Fortis Healthcare said only 12 doctors and 12 para-medics have resigned. The Fortis management maintained that less than 15 doctors will leave the hospital and there is no need to press the panic button or have a back up plan to recruit doctors. Dr Trehan’s camp says the number will swell in the coming days.
Ii is learnt that many Dr Trehan loyalists at Escorts who have put in their papers or are thinking of doing so are not sure where they will be absorbed at Apollo. A factor that could prevent a mass-scale exit of doctors is Apollo’s capacity to absorb them. The 650-bed Apollo has around 300 doctors and 25 cardiac surgeon. When contacted, a spokesperson of Indraprastha Apollo Hospital said: “It is too early to say if we can accommodate the whole team. We are waiting for the exact numbers to come.”
Meanwhile, there is also uncertainty over the future of about 700 nurses who are being trained at Escorts for being placed in the US. These nurses have been recruited by US-based nurse placement company TPAN (owned by Dr Trehan’s brother Naveen Trehan and Samir Parikh). Escorts incurs an expenditure of over Rs 8 crore as annual salaries for these trainee nurses. Fortis sources say about 70% of these nurses are redundant as the hospital employs 500 full-time nurses forks 3 32-bed hospital.
Meanwhile, Fortis Healthcare shares touched an all time low of Rs 86.05 on Thursday, but recovered to dose at Rs 88.50, down 1.02 %. The Apollo Hospital share price fell by 1.4% to Rs 496.60.

Fortis Healthcare has scrapped the post of an all-powerful executive director and created seven divisions in Escorts Heart Institute, following Dr Nafesh Trehan's departure.
